Description:   An entry in Locke’s journal dated 30 June 1678, with the heading “Books of mine put into the box marked C.B. No 1 [etc.]” (there were five boxes in all). The books were stored in Paris while Locke and his pupil, Caleb Banks, travelled to the south of France.

There is a copy of this list in MS. Locke b. 2, headed “A Catalogue of Mr Banks’s books and mine put into boxes Jul. 78; endorsed by Locke “Libri Jul 78 and “A catalogue of my books left at Paris 78 The manuscript is written on a single sheet, folded to form 4 pages, 383 × 265 mm.

Translations from Nicole’s Essais de morale   [mid-1678?]

Location:   Pierpont Morgan Library, MA 232.

Description:   Locke translated three of Pierre Nicole’s Essais de morale during his stay in France, probably sometime between late 1676 and April 1679. Sometime “shortly after mid-1678” [Yolton], he carefully copied the text into a small volume, together with a dedication “To the Right Hon:ble Margaret Countesse of Shaftesbury” to whom he presented the volume as a souvenir of his trip to France.

The volume is a small octavo, made up of 25 quires, signed and paginated by Locke. It is bound in gold-tooled black morocco, with gilt edging, and two metal clasps. The dedication occupies seven unnumbered pages. The first discourse (“conteining in short the naturall proof of the Existence of a God, & the immortality of the Soule”) is on pp. 1-34; the second discourse (“of the Weaknesse of Man”) is on pp. 35-140; andthe third discourse (“concerneing the way of preserving peace with men”) is in two parts on pp. 141-363 and 365-477.

Description:   This essay was originally written in March 1677 and sent in a letter to Dr. Denis Grenville. See description under 1677

Locke copied the paper into his Journal the following year, written between the entries dated 2 and 5 December 1678. The entry is headed “An essay concerning Recreation in answer to D Gs desire Mar 77.

Description:   A draft for a letter to Dr. Denis Grenville, with the marginal caption “Scrupulosity.” It is written in Locke’s journal between the entries for 2 and 5 December 1678, but dated “6 Dec.” on page 367. Locke’s letter of 26 November/6 December 1678, which includes only the first half of the piece, is in the Bodleian Library, MS. Rawlinson D. 849, ff. 150-151; the continuation (pages 367-378) may never have been sent. A copy of the letter exists in the British Library, Add. MS. 4290, ff. 115-119.
