Abstract

Study utilized the framework of Ajzen’s Theory of Planned behavior to uncover both barriers and contributing factors for continued 4-H membership.  A qualitative analysis indicated that 4-H membership can terminate during the middle school grades, yet perceived behavioral control among 4-H members had the largest impact on whether or not a 4-H member continued involvement.  Findings also suggest that parents have a large impact on whether or not a youth continues 4-H membership.  Researchers conclude with recommendations related to parental education programs and increasing 4-H member retention.
