Abstract

Purpose of this study was to generate defensible data showing the positive effects of Texas 4-H. The population was community club 4-H members in 44 Texas counties during 1998-99. Findings: Texas excels in promoting feelings of self-worth in members, instills the importance of community service, teaches members skills in decision making and planning and contributes to the youth's sense of belonging and peer acceptance. Urban and rural children experience similar life skills activities and skills. Girls have a greater appreciation of community activities and feel that 4-H provides a safe haven to try new things. 4-H members 13 years and younger have less recognition of the skills gained through 4-H.
