Abstract

The primary objective of the study was to determine the major characteristics of successful adult volunteer 4-H club leaders in West Virginia as perceived by West Virginia 4-H agents. Data were obtained from 4-H agents in all 55 counties of the state. A modified Delphi technique was used to collect data. Of the 37 characteristics identified by participants, the most important were: accepts all kinds of youth, flexible, enthusiastic, responsible, open and honest, relates well, motivated and desires to help young people. Few differences were noted when the data was categorized by years of service or gender of 4-H agents. Females, however, tended to rate all items more important than did males.
