Abstract

The article focuses on increasing the web content access and usability for people with disabilities like blind or low-vision users. Accessibility consultant and web developer Karl Groves reflects on ignorance as the major reason for inaccessible websites. It also talks about the amendments to be made in the regulations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to make websites on the Internet accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities under the legal framework.

Notes

The article discusses the barriers in web accessibility and stated that ignorance was the most important reason that most websites were still having a large amount of accessibility errors. Some web designers don't even recognize that the user on the other end could have trouble accessing websites they designed. Then it considered assistive technology with regard to the coding and programming techniques. Only if the website has been correctly coded can assistive technologies such as screen readers properly recognize its content and help disabled readers. Improvement of web accessibility not only benefit marginalized audiences, but can benefit the general population as a whole.
