| Abstract |
In 1890, anti-Socialist legislation was rescinded in Germany, enabling the working class to establish media outlets and to achieve a degree of self-representation. My dissertation takes the date 1890 as a starting point from which to examine the manner in which "the people" represented their fraught sense of national identity through visual culture twenty years after German unification in 1871.
