  abstract = {Presents a brief history of medical literature and medical libraries in Europe, USA and New Zealand. The earliest complete written accounts of medical experience are found in Egyptian papyri. Ancient Greek doctors contributed a great deal to the advancement of medicine and the preserving of medical knowledge. Specialist medical libraries were founded from the Tenth century. During the Eighteenth and Nineteenth centuries the Royal Colleges and medical societies built up substantial collections and these formed the basis of medical school and hospital libraries. The oldest medical library in the USA was established in 1763 and today the USA is the world leader in providing medical information through the National Library of Medicine{\textquoteright}s indexing service. In New Zealand, hospitals gradually took responsibility for medical libraries from the mid Nineteenth century and medical information is now regarded as an important part of patient care. Worldwide the medical library has developed as a specialist science library and the need for specialist medical librarians to manage these collections has been established.},
