The purpose of this study is to review the historical background and role of medical libraries in health care development. Role of medical librarians in the digital era with changing information needs and information seeking behavior of users is also discussed. Over the years, medical libraries have supported medical education, practice and research. Most of the medical libraries exist in hospitals, medical schools, medical research centres, training institutes and offices of medical associations. The Egyptians housed libraries in temples. Aristotle and Diokles had an excellent collection of medical books. Baghdad and Cordova had great number of medial libraries during middle ages. The Royal College of Physicians (England) library was eructed in sixteenth century. The first ever medical library in the USA was established by the Pennsylvania Hospital in 1763. In the sub-continent, the library of Calcutta Medical College was established in 1835. The history of medical libraries in Pakistan dates back to 1860. Currently, there are more than 120 medical libraries in Pakistan. Evidence based education & practice is totally depend upon accurate, current, authentic and timely provision of information. Therefore, an efficient library and information system is required in every medical organization.
