  abstract = {This essay provides a new interpretation of the history surrounding the efforts of both W. E. B. Du Bois and Carter G. Woodson to produce encyclopedias on the experiences of people of African descent. It focuses on portions of the story that either have been misconstrued or, in some cases, overlooked within the existing scholarship. By highlighting the manner in which the encyclopedia “grew and changed” for Du Bois and Woodson, this essay explores how both scholars initiated work on separate projects at different times,yet were unable to combine their efforts.},
