My research focuses on the reading habits of the British working class, from the beginnings of industrialization to 1945, where one can trace and even quantify a kind of cultural conservatism over the course of two centuries. Literary canons may change over time; but my thesis is that, at any given point in time, the reading tastes of the British working classes lagged well behind those of the educated middle classes.
