N1 - <p>Surveys current scholarship on the evolution of New England women's literacy. It then presents a different view of female literacy in late eighteenth-century New England. The authors conclude that the proportion of New England women who could read and write was high and rising after 1765 and that literacy may well have been very prevalent among younger women closer to I780 than to 1830.</p>
