AB - The growth of the seminary libraries of the Franciscan Province of St. John the Baptist parallels the development in the United States of libraries of Catholic diocesan seminaries and Protestant seminaries. The libraries of this U.S. province originated as unorganized book collections in the 1800s. In the early twentieth century, the friars placed an increasing emphasis on collection growth and organization. Through book bequests and the purchasing efforts of several friars, the libraries of the province acquired materials, including a research collection for the theologate. With the decline of Catholic religious vocations, the seminaries of the province closed, resulting in the dispersion of its seminary collections
