Charles-Sulpice Flament (1758-1855), a French scholar, was the first librarian of the Royal Library in The Hague. Goswin de Stassart (1780-1854) was the French prefect of the department of the ‘Bouches de la Meuse’ from 1811 to 1813, residing in The Hague. Letters between these two men, who were also good friends, show how Flament acted as an intermediary for Stassart, giving advice about the composition of his friend’s private library, buying books for him at public auctions in the Netherlands and France, as well as reading Stassart’s manuscripts or lending him books from the Royal Library.
