Andre Morellet's Library

From the 1750s until his death at age ninety-one in 1819, Andre Morellet formed a collection of over 4,700 titles with strong holdings of English language works, Elzevir editions, and eighteenth-century publications on political economy. He monitored his library carefully, watching out for new volumes to be added, keeping his catalogue up to date, and making sure that borrowed items were returned. As a source of material to be used in advocating enlightened reforms, Morellet's books were an indispensable part of his daily life. Contemporary records and his own published works and private letters provide information about acquisitions, a rob bery in 1817, the physical setting of his library, and the choice of the motto Veritas omnia vincit for his bookplate. Present locations of sixteen volumes once owned by Morellet are listed in an appendix.
