Abstract

During his lifetime (1650-1729) William King, Archbishop of Dublin, assembled a private library of rather more than seven thousand volumes, purchasing and collecting a wide variety of books and pamphlets from several sources. What may have prompted King's interest in particular items or, in a larger sense, what may have helped
form his conception of his library is the subject of this article, with evidence drawn largely from the Lyons Collection of correspondence at Trinity College, Dublin, as well as books and manuscripts housed in the GPA/
Bolton Library, Cashel (Co. Tipperary).
