Abstract
For more than a century, there have been conflicting views over what constitutes a sound bookbinding, and how and whether books should be rebound, restored, or left untreated. The sources of these various views can be traced to the writings of librarians, bibliographers, bookbinders, and conservators. The author tries to reconcile the differences among these viewpoints.
