Abstract
In the nineteenth century, aristocrats lived mainly in the country, where they often maintained substantial libraries. But the library often existed for a variety of social reasons other than purely for reading. The social life of the aristocratic library changed completely during the course of the century, from male sanctuary to public reception room. A number of well-documented libraries are examined here.
