Abstract

From 1760 to 1766, the Green Palace in Weimar, a Renaissance building from 1565, was converted into a Rococo library. The result was an individual artistic form that represents the Rococo in general in an excellent way. Using concrete details such as gold-colored metal overlays, hot-glue chalk paint, basket arches, wooden repositories, books, pilasters, cartouches and much more, Achim Ilchmann explains how these individual moments constitute the whole, namely the Rococo, and how, conversely, the Rococo appears in the individual moments. The main architects were Johann George Schmiedt and his successor August Friedrich Straßburger. Schmiedt's invention was the Schmiedt oval cylinder set into the cuboid cubature, which determines the space as a structuring geometric form of movement. Straßburger extended the cylinder over three floors. Both builders have thus created a genuine artistic individual form that is integrated into an overarching architectural rococo concept. A special feature of the library is its Rococo-appropriate realization using only inexpensive, simple materials such as softwood, chalk paint, copper, zinc and plaster
