Abstract
A review of the conception and of the various incarnations of the German national library, from the first attempts up to the present day, via the creation of the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig in 1912 and that of the Deutsche Bibliothek in Frankfurt in 1946. At reunification, the creation of the DDB (Die Deutsche Bibliothek) brought together these two entities together with the German musical archives in Berlin. In 2006, this library finally became “national” by adopting the name of Deutsche Nationalbibliothek.
