Abstract

The article describes the particularities in the development of the Soviet book production and librarianship at the time of the so-called Cold War when the differing interests of the political systems reglemented the activities in nearly all areas and especially in the humanitarian sphere.  On the basis of the meanwhile accessible materials and the author's own experience the main steps of the constitution of the system of book printing and librarianship operated by the State and controlled by ideologically oriented authorities are outlined. In addition, questions of the organisation and structure of ideological control from the  fourties to the eighties are discussed.  The present investigation does not only aim at outlining the influence of the Cold War on the development of Soviet book production and librarianship but mainly tries to contribute to an understanding of the severe consequences. Only by doing so we are able to cope with them

Annotation

Includes a section on The Cold War in Libraries that discusses how government entities deployed libraries to advance what the author calls ideological indoctrination of the Soviet people.
