Development of Libraries in Zaire: Inventory and Review of the Literature 1888--part 2

Paper presented at the Standing conference on Library Materials on Africa (SCOLMA) Seminar, London, 18 Jan 90. Before Zaire was granted independence in 1960, 3 important academic institutions of higher education had libraries: the Grande Seminaire de Majidi; the Universite Lovanium (now Kinshasa University); and the Universite Officielle du Congo (now Lubumbashi Univeristy). Describes these institutions, the University of Kisangani, professional training and the recruitment of librarians, cooperative schemes between libraries in Zaire, and identifies problems encountered in Zaire's library service development.
