Rural library service in France, 1945-1995
In November 1945, the council of ministers created the first lending libraries for the rural population of France. Established in all French counties since 1982, the service is now responsible for all communities with less than 10 000 inhabitants. Reaching more than 35 000 villages today, the 92 library networks are servicing almost 50 percent of the French population.
