Josey was a librarian, activist, educator and scholar. He was the first chair of the Black Caucus of the American Library Association and served as president of the American Library Association from 1984 to 1985. His library career included positions at Delaware State College, Savannah State College and at the library schools of North Carolina Central University and the University of Pittsburgh.
