Examines aspects of collection, arrangement, storage, circulation and dispersal of books in Benedictine libraries, along with copyists, donors and readers.
Part 1 focuses on the early Middle Ages (500–1000) and the central Middle Ages (1000–1215).
Part II considers the later Middle Ages (1215–1540); the Reformation; and the period since. The focus is on Italy for the early years. Examples from the later period were drawn mainly from England.
