Abstract
Librarians in theological school libraries in the United States constitute a distinctive subset of academic librarians. The reaction of seminary librarians to the varying needs and changing character of library and information science in the twentieth century can be traced through four stages. The snail's pace of theological librarianship in adapting to the pragmatic and technical character of early-twentieth-century librarianship resulted in a mature integration of nineteenth-century scholarly pursuits and late-twentieth-century information science.
