Robert Damien, the French philosopher, published an essay in 1995 in which he examines the relationship between political power and libraries and, more generally, between the state and the written word. He highlights a 1627 library science treatise published in French by Gabriel Naudé. According to Damien, Naudé foresaw the modernity of libraries and raised basic issues that are still relevant, to wit the function of books and libraries in the administration of a nation.
