Abstract
Established in 1741, Leadhill's Miners' Library, is Britain’s oldest subscription library and lays claim to being the first library established for working-class people. The library sought to improve the lives of miners through education and mutual improvement. The article examines the rise and fall of membership over the years up to the present day where the library remains an active institution.
