Literacy and Reading in Iceland

Examines the question of why Iceland has one of the highest literacy rates in the world against a background of geography, cultural memory and oral tradition. Presents secondary data concerning the publishing scene, the library in Iceland and competitors for leisure time. The research methodology is derived from qualitative research and grounded theory and incorporates 57 interviews conducted among a cross-section of the Icelandic community in Spring 1988.
