Discusses the founding of the John Rylands Library. The collection was built by the wealthy British businessman as his personal collection. After his death his widow established the library which complemented the local public library by focusing on rare books and rare manuscripts, otherwise inaccessible in Manchester. The library became part of the University of Manchester in 1972.
