Abstract |
Herbert John M. Maltby (c. 1881-1954) was not originally a librarian. After working at Bradford City Art Gallery he had moved to Salford (England) as curator of its Art Gallery and Museum, where he was to become one of the earliest promoters of Salford's not-yet famous painter, L. S. Lowry (1887-1976). In 1935 Maltby was appointed as Director of Art Galleries, Libraries, and Museums in that borough, but his tenure was inevitably to be seriously affected by the outbreak of war. Described by Alan Longworth as "a quietly efficient librarian, friendly and popular with his own staff’, Maltby retired in 1946 to Bury St Edmunds where he became librarian of the Cullum Library and compiled that city's published official guide of 1953.
