Abstract
Historical reflection on western library history is important, in the light of the contemporary goal-oriented practice of the profession. Classification into eras on periodising forms the point of departure for the selection of facts and events worthy of mention. Determines the 8 rules of periodising in 3 categories: the periodising of aspectual history in relation to general history; identification of the characteristic feature of each era; and consequent formulation of terms for the periods and the delimitation of eras. Discusses the implications of the periodising proposal for the library.
