Abstract | The purpose of the thesis is to conduct comparative research into the subject of professional library and information education in the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China. The research is based on two hypotheses which are as follows: (1) professional library and information education is a common phenomenon in the domain of library and information science all over the world, there should be similarities of professional library and information education between the United Kingdom and the People's Republic of China; (2) since there are sharp differences of social, cultural and other factors between these two countries, there should be differences in the sphere of professional library and information education, including its objectives, course content, quality of staff and students, facilities and its stages of developments. These anticipated similarities and differences are investigated in more detail, with a view to identifying their nature and seeking some explanation of why they have emerged. To give the research an added practical element, the question of how to improve professional library and information education in general, especially in such developing countries as the People's Republic of China, is addressed. The research methods which have been adopted include: literature review, postal questionnaire, correspondence, personal interview and comparative method. |
