Abstract |
In recovering the early history of a private subscription library founded in 1784 in Perth, this essay endeavours to shed new light on engagement with the Enlightenment elsewhere in contemporary Scotland, at the same time exploring how people beyond the three principal burghs may have sought to participate actively in their nation's vibrant intellectual culture.
