Trends and Issues in LIS Education in Asia

This article highlights major trends and issues in LIS education in selected Asian countries, based on a series of international workshops held in Tokyo as a part of the Library and Information Professions and Education Renewal (LIPER) Project. Speakers from China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand each presented a status report on LIS education in his/her country in terms of the current situation, qualification systems for librarianship, recent changes in curricula and employment markets for certified librarians, and credit exchanges with nearby countries. From the presentations, we identified eight common trends in LIS education in Asia and also identified issues unique to each nation.
