| Abstract |
The place of fiction has been a topic of debate since the first publicly funded libraries were established. Ranging from outright prohibition to grudging acceptance, librarians have struggled with this problem child which has proven so popular with their patrons. This article looks predominantly at nineteenth century attitudes in Britain, America and Australia and concludes that while the nature of the fiction problem has changed, it still remains an issue for the profession. |
