Reflections from the author, director of the Rare Book School at Columbia University and at the University of Virginia, 1983-2009, on three key transitions in the history of printed books in western Europe and America. The first two occurred in the 19th century as technology changed printing. The third was in the 1960s and 1970s with the rise of paperbacks paperback and television and film emerging as a serious threats to reading.
