Examines the later career of Hannah Packard James (1835–1903), who was the first librarian of the Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes-Barre, one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Library Association, and an early leader in the American Library Association.

 Received the 2012 Donald G. Davis Article Award issued by the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association every even-numbered year to recognize the best article written in English in the field of United States and Canadian library history.
