Abstract |
Utilizing a variety of primary and secondary source material, the author explored the establishment and growth of the Children's Department at the St. Louis Public Library, 1909--1933. The St. Louis Public Library is examined as an exemplar of how children's librarianship matured as a profession. Issues of race and gender for both the librarians and their patrons were used as categories of analysis.
