Although the title suggests a broad analysis of negritude, the focus is on Senghor, his 'Afri-centered' epistimology' as a critique of Western philosophy and his 'essentialism of hybridity.' This exploration of Senghor's complex theories about the relationship between Africa and Europe gives a new, more subtle understanding of the thinking of Senghor. The author is careful to nuance his comments on, for example, Senghor's essentialism. But there is very little on Césaire in this study. More on Césaire's historical approach to negritude would have provide greater balance. Nevertheless, the analyses by the author are very insightful and make this work required reading for anyone conducting research on Senghor theories. TH
