AB - The Rainforest Foundation began with a meeting in an Indian village near the Xingu River. Raoni, a Kayapó leader, asked Sting, the musician, for help in defending the forest. Sting said yes. In 1989, Sting and Raoni toured the world to raise awareness and funds to draw public attention to the effort to demarcate (give legal protection to) the territory of the Mekrãgnoti people, an area with a perimeter of nearly 1,500 kilometers covered with tropical rainforests.
