Abstract
In September of 1986 a survey of 185 families was performed in twenty communities of the canton Saraguro, province of Loja, Ecuador. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the woody species existing in the zone, their frequency, uses, and the preferences of the small-farm indigenous landholders toward them. The goal was to use this data as an aid in the programming of agroforestry activities for the existing CARE-MAG-HCPL-CTCVE Community forestry Systems Project, in integration with the CARE-MAG Community Land Use Management Project. A brief description of the zone, including location, climate, soils, and land use, is given. Following this is a brief description of the survey, presentation and discussion of results, and recommendations for promotion and implementation of agroforestry activities in the zone.
