Abstract
This paper details the effects that several cultural practices of the Dai people (a national minority) of Southwest China (Yunnan Province) have on plant environment. Some of these are the introduction and distribution of locally cultivated plants and its link to Hinayana Buddhism; and the preservation of certain pristine forests due to a "Holy Hills" ideology. Also includes the economic and ecological significance of Dai fuelwood cultivation as it relates to conservation.
