National Archives, PRO 30/24/17, f. 285.

Description:   A brief untitled account of the early history of the Shaftesbury family. The endorsement on Locke’s autograph includes the date “73”; based on this and internal evidence, it is likely that it was written between November 1673 and March 1674. Four manuscripts have survived; in addition to the autograph in the British Library, there is a copy in the Malmesbury papers and two copies in the Public Record Office.

The British Library manuscript is a single leaf measuring approximately 304 &timres; 227 mm. The text is entirely in Locke’s hand, and is endorsed “Shaftesbury E of places & Extraction 73.

The manuscript in the Malmesbury papers is a single leaf measuring approximately 320 &ties; 210 mm. It is an undated copy in an unknown hand; it was probably copied from Locke’s autograph, since the texts are nearly identical.

The manuscript in bundle 16 of the Shaftesbury papers is written on the first leaf of a bifolium, each leaf measuirng 227 × 187 mm, and endorsed in a later hand “Account of the Ashley Family”. It is undated and in an unknown hand. The text indicates that it was derived from the Malmesbury manuscript.

The manuscript in bundle 17 of the Shaftesbury papers is written on the first page of a bifolium, each leaf measuring 292 × 206 mm, and endorsed “May 1677 | A Copy of Mr Fisher’s paper concerning the Earle of Shaftesbury”.
