Bodleian Library, MS. Locke b. 4, ff. 75-76. Description: Extracts in Locke’s hand from the Printing Act of 1662 [14 Car. 2, c. 33], with Lockes criticisms. The paper is written on a single folded sheet, each leaf measuring 314 × 194 mm; Locke’s endorsement, “Printing | 94”, appears on the last page. This is the first of several documents dealing with the attempt to prevent the renewal of the Act. On 30 November 1694, the House of Commons appointed a committee to examine expiring acts, including the Printing Act. The committee recommended on 9 January 1695 that the act be renewed. On 11 February 1695, the Commons rejected the recommendation and called for a new bill. Locke and the College (Edward Clarke and John Freke) were involved in opposing the reinstitution of licensing. Locke followed the discussions from Oates, and offered his criticisms of the 1662 Printing Act, probably during December 1694. A copy of the paper, in the hand of Sylvester Brounower, is among the Shaftesbury papers in the Public Record Office, presumably having been given by Locke to the third Earl; it was probably made in 1695 or 1696. The manuscript is in very poor condition and is frequently illegible. For further papers relating to this issue, see entries for “Printing 94/5”. Publications:

Adversaria theologica 94 (1694 December-early 1695)Location: Bodleian Library, MS. Locke c. 43, pp. 1-46. Description: An important set of theological notes, begun at the end of 1694. Locke began by creating an outline of theological topics to be investigated (pages 1-7). After a gap of several blank pages (pages 8-11), he began a set of theological notes, many in the form of antitheses: opposing viewpoints are given on opposite pages – for example, “Triitas” (page 12) and “Non Trinitas” (page 13). Many of the notes consist primarily of lists of relevant scriptural passages, but there are many original comments, marked with Locke’s initials. The notebook is titled “94 Adversaria theologica” inside the front cover. It is likely that Locke set up the note book around December 1694, when we informed his friend Philippus van Limborch of his intention to devote himself to the study of theology. It is likely that the outline of topics (pages 1-7) was written at this time. There is no direct evidence for the date of the notes, but Nuovo (see Discussion below) believes that it is possible that Locke completed the notes before he began drafting The reasonableness of Christianity early in 1695.
