Whitby on the Epistles. 1 Cor XV.53   (1699 September 19)

Location:   Bodleian Library, MS. Locke c. 39, f. 25.

Description:   Notes in Locke’s hand on a single sheet of paper, which was found between pages 106 and 107 of his copy of Daniel Whitby’s A paraphrase and commentary on all the Epistles of the New Testament (1700). The paper is headed “Whitby on the Epistles. p. 106 1 Cor XV.53’. On the verso (otherwise blank) is the date “19 Sept 99; this was apparently the conclusion of an endorsement, but the beginning has been torn away (perhaps to conceal the identity of the author Locke is commenting upon).

Whitby sent Locke a letter on 11 January 1698[/99], with an enclosure relating to Locke’s dispute with Stillingfleet over the resurrection of the same body (this is probably “The preface to the first Epistle to the Corinthians” MS Locke e. 11). Locke wrote a reply on 17 January 1698[/99]. As Locke’s notes are dated 19 September 1699, they were clearly written before the publication of Whitby’s book in 1700; they were probably based on the preface Locke received in January 1699. It is therefore likely that the heading originally read simply “1 Cor XV.53” and that Locke added “Whitby on the Epistles. p. 106” after Whitby’s book was published.”

Locke’s Paraphrase and notes on the first epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians (1706) contains a note on 1 Cor. 15:53 similar to the present notes, but identical to a note on the same verse in Locke’s interleaved Bible (LL 309). The present notes seem to represesnt Locke’s first reaction to Whitby’s preface.

Draft bills to regulate elections   [1699?]

Location:   Somerset Record Office, Taunton:
DD\SF/7/1/30 [formerly DD/SF 3833, pt 3]: Draft A [date uncertain]
DD\SF/2/119/44 [formerly DD/SF 3256]: Draft B [date uncertain]
DD\SF/13/2/9 [formerly DD/SF 2675]: Draft C [1699?]
DD\SF/7/1/58 [formerly DD/SF 3842]: Draft D [1699?]
DD\SF/13/2/49 [formerly DD/SF 3967]: Draft E [1699?]
DD\SF/13/2/1 [formerly DD/SF 670]: Heads of a bill [date uncertain]

Description:   A series of draft bills to regulate elections in the papers of Edward Clarke. Two of the drafts (designated Drafts A and B by Knights) relate to Country Party initiatives in the reign of Charles II (although they may be copies made ca. 1699). Draft A is endorsed “Elections Sr EH” [Sir Edward Harley] and Draft B is endorsed “Copy of the Bill to regulate the Election of Members to serve in the Commons House of Parliamt”.

Three of the drafts (Drafts C, D and E) most likely date from 1699 and are associated with The College’s parliamentary activity. Draft C is in the hand of John Freke and endorsed “7 expedients”. Draft D is a scribal copy of Draft C, annotated by Clarke and by Locke with suggested revisions. Draft E, in the hand of Clarke, is a revised version of the bill which incorporates some (but not all) of the revisions suggested in Draft D.

The final document is a set of heads for a bill to regulate elections. It is not clear whether this relates to the 1669 bill or to the earlier bills.

Draft of an act of Parliament for regulation of Elections   [1699?]

Location:   University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Wilson Library, Preston Davie Collection, folder 323.

Description:   Another draft bill to regulate elections, in the hand of John Freke, with the endorsement “Draft of an act of Parliament for regulation of Elections” (f. 2v) in an unknown hand. The draft is related to other drafts held in the Somerset Record Office (see previous entry) A preliminary analysis suggests that it precedes Draft D and and may precede Draft C. Like the other drafts, it most likely dates from 1699.

The paper consists of a single sheet, folded to form two leaves; the top quarter of f. 2 has been cut away. Folio 1 measures approximately 21.7 × 30.1 cm; folio 2 measures approximately 21.3 × 21.2 cm. The paper has a “coat of arms” watermark broadly similar to Heawood 724-776, but where the spines of the dragons on either side of the cross are more rounded at the end, and including a small extra circle at the bottom of the design. The marks inside the two larger circles are hard to read but may possibly be ‘PG’ in the upper large circle and ‘CB’ in the lower large circle.

Description based on information from J. C. Walmsley.

Resurrectio et quae sequuntur   [1699?]

Location:   Bodleian Library, MS. Locke c. 27, ff. 162-177.

Description:   Notes by Locke on 1 Cor. XV, headed “Resurrectio et quae sequuntur”. Written on a quire of 8 sheets, folded to form 32 pages, 197 × 77 mm; the text is written on the left page of each opening, with additions and corrections on the right; ff. 174-177 are blank. The notes are undated, but must have been written between 1690 and 1701 [Wainwright]. Long estimates a date about 1699.

This paper may be the same as the “Treatise of resurrection and hell torments” that Anthony Collins wished to publish in A collection of several pieces, but which Peter King refused to allow (see Collins to Pierre Desmaizeaux, 28 February 1719 and 17 April 1722, British Library, Add. MS. 4282, ff. 159, 192). This manuscript is an important source for Locke’s mortalism.
