Description:
A list in Locke’;s hand of persons to receive presentation copies of the fourth edition of his Essay,
captioned “Copys of 1700“.
The list provides for 5 copies, all of whom appear in the longer list in MS. Locke c. 25, f. 54r (next item).
The fourth edition was published in mid-December.

Humane understanding 1700 [Presentation copies]

Description:
A list in Lockes hand of persons to receive presentation copies of the fourth edition of his Essay,
in a column headed “Humane understanding 1700”,
on a sheet endorsed “Copys 95”.
The list provides for 13 copies, of which four are marked to receive copies with gilt bindings.
There is another list, containing five of these names, in MS. Locke f. 29, p. 158 (previous item).
The manuscript consists of on folded sheet, 310 × 193 mm; this list is in the first column on the third page.

A note in Lockes hand, with the marginal caption “Color”, dated [17]00 and intialed by Locke.
The note begins at the bottom of p. 275 and continues at the top of p. 318.

Description:
A paper template for a truss, roughly 26 × 16 cm, with annotations in Locke’s hand.
Although undated, Dewhurst notes that “other correspondence suggests it was designed about 1700”.
