RN - Hervey Allen (1889-1949), born in Pittsburgh, is best known for his 1933 national bestseller Anthony Adverse and especially its Warner Brothers film, which won four Academy Awards in 1936. Allen's father was the inventor of an automated blast furnace stoker. Allen enrolled at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1909, but because of a sports injury, left Annapolis and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1915. He served in combat during World War I. His poetry collection, Wampum and Old Gold, won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize in 1921.
