Abstract |
In fictitious Ampipe, a dying mill town, high school football star Stefen Djordjevic (Tom Cruise) strives to earn an athletic scholarship to dodge a dead-end career as a steelworker. His girlfriend (Lea Thompson) and his bullheaded coach (Craig T. Nelson) both clash over Stefan and his American dream. New York Times critic Janet Maslin writes, “There’s nothing to do in Ampipe but drink, weld, and root for the local football team. Stef dreams of becoming an engineer, and he has a sweetheart . . . For the time being, they must content themselves, respectively, with the football team and the high school band.”
