Abstract |
Nathan Rownd is a widowed farmer in the fictional Monongahela Valley village of Tenney’s Landing. When a tractor accident nearly kills him, daughter Virginia and her teenage son move back from suburbia in order to work the farm as Nathan recovers. The plot develops as Virginia discovers the call of the land versus the challenge of her separation from her husband and her usual life.

Catherine Tudish (1952— ), born in Greensboro, Greene County, had a brief stay on the Monongahela River before traveling the world with her military family. She's worked as a journalist and taught literature and writing at Harvard and Dartmouth.
