Follows the Moss trio—Chinatown, Melody, and Big Mat—three black half-brothers who leave Kentucky for the Monongahela River Valley for promised factory jobs. The Mosses endure bleak working conditions and end up on opposition sides of the 1919 Steel Strike.

William Attaway (1911-86), a Mississippi-born African American, followed a darker, more violent, and naturalist style like Emile Zola’s Germinal. Attaway later wrote for radio, television, and Hollywood.
